I was excited about the opening of nature-inspired skincare brand, Stenders, at Plaza Singapura in Singapore. This would be Stenders' first boutique in Southeast Asia. Honestly, I was drawn to the beautiful brand images that I saw online prior to the launch, especially those images with the pretty pink roses. I have to admit that those lovely garden images could invoke a sense of calm and peace... I'm a firm believer that scents can transcend moods and feelings and Stenders products all smell so good!
Stenders was founded in 2001 by Janis Berzins and Zane Dreimane in their hometown of Riga, Latvia, with the duo starting off with a small shop selling handmade soap. They started making soap with natural ingredients – plant extracts, essential oils, rose buds, and dried herbs and ancient Latvian recipes. And business took off from there and the product range grew and grew and there are 320 products listed on their catalogue today!
I was quite surprised about the affordable price point of Stenders products and I had the chance to speak to Julien Laporte, chef executive of Stenders, when he was in town for Stenders' official opening recently. Julien mentioned that all Stenders products are still made in Latvia, where the labour cost is low, and so they are able to keep the production cost low and passed it on to the consumers. Well, that's an attractive factor to me, considering that Singapore is becoming increasingly more and more expensive to live in...
